iQfoil International Games Youth & Junior, Day 2

14/04/2022 - 19:04 in Sport by iQfoil

Two days of unusually light winds in Campione del Garda for the iQFOiL INTERNATIONAL GAMES YOUTH & JUNIOR, reserved for sailors Under 19 and Under 17. The 74 young athletes from 16 countries hit the water today with the Ora – the classic breeze from the south of the Lake Garda – around 1 pm, but had to wait another hour before they were able to start racing.

With the wind around 7/8 knots, the Committee was forced to opt again for the Slalom Races, like yesterday. They will proceed to the other races of the class format, Course and Marathon, in the coming days with stronger wind. Today, two trials were completed by the 27 Under 17s and two for the Under 19s, Men and Women fleets.

Two more bullets for Croatian Ian Anic, among the youngest, followed by Dutch Skip Brüll and Italian Mattia Saoncella. Among the older sailors, Sofia Renna (ITA) keeps on doing well in the Women, recording a first and discarding a fifth place, she is first at 6 points. Just two points behind her, in second, there's Slovenia's Lina Erzen, best of the day with a first and a second place. Third, with an important gap, the Czech Katerina Altmannova. In the juniors, Italian Federico Alan Pilloni (7 pts) holds on to the lead with two wins of the day. Hidde Van der Meer (NED) is second with almost double the points, 13, tie with the third, Jacopo Gavioli (ITA).

"I am Leonard Nussbaumer, I'm 17 year old and I'm here in Campione for my first IQ International Games regatta. I am really enjoying it, my goal is mainly to compare myself with the others and to to see if I am able to stay in the pack. It's really cool here, even if there wasn't a lot of wind and it was a little patchy, but tomorrow I hope there will be more wind and we can do some Course Racing."

"I like these light conditions because I am really light myself. Today it was really tricky to race because it was a bit shifty.. I am 14 year old, I've started windsurfing about four years ago, I like to feel free on the board and with the wind and foiling is the best part because you are flying", says Robin Sijan Zico Zeley (U17 category)

Tomorrow's plan is for a morning start with the northern wind 'Peler', the first signal is expected at 9am.
