iQFOiL Youth & Junior Europeans: Spectacular Racing in Varkiza
Varkiza turned it on today for Day 4 of the 2026 iQFOiL Youth & Junior European Championships, delivering the conditions everyone had been waiting for. With sunshine and a steady 20-knot breeze, all four fleets enjoyed a spectacular day of Course Racing, completing five races each and bringing the championship into full swing after a challenging start to the week.
Hosted by the Nautical Club of Vari-Varkiza, the event has brought together 290 young sailors representing 31 nations, and today's conditions provided an ideal opportunity for the competitors to showcase their skills, speed and endurance on the racecourse.
In the U19 Women's fleet, the battle between reigning World Champion Taisiia Stopchenko (RUS) and Julia Przybyl (POL) continued throughout the day. The two sailors pushed each other across all five races, with Stopchenko successfully defending her overall lead despite the pressure from her Polish rival. Behind them, Alba Klein (ISR) delivered an impressive performance, climbing into third overall and establishing herself as another contender for the European Championship podium.
The U17 Girls' fleet saw a remarkable display of Turkish strength, with the top three positions now entirely occupied by sailors from Türkiye. Reigning U17 World Champion Parla Kabasakal (TUR) continued her dominant campaign, adding four race wins to her scorecard and consolidating her position at the top of the standings. Behind her, compatriots Nisa Üstündağ (TUR)and Ece Melis Baş (TUR) complete the provisional podium, underlining the depth of talent in the Turkish youth iQFOiL program.
In the U19 Men's fleet, the day belonged to Artun Şenol (TUR) and Leon Jankowski (POL), who set themselves apart from the rest of the fleet in the strong breeze. The two sailors traded first and second places throughout the day, producing a close contest at the front of the fleet. Şenol ultimately retained the overall lead, while Jankowski's excellent performance allowed him to climb into second place, pushing Kfir Nov (ISR) down to third. With the leading pair showing such consistent speed, the fight for the U19 European title is becoming increasingly intense.
Meanwhile, the U17 Boys' fleet remains one of the closest competitions of the championship. Although the top four positions are unchanged from yesterday, the battle at the front could hardly be tighter. František Burda (CZE)continues to lead, but Enric Patiño Riutord (ESP) and Swann Manhaval (FRA) are right on his heels, with just one point separating the top three sailors. After another five races in demanding conditions, the European title remains very much up for grabs.
With four days of competition now completed, the championship is entering its decisive stages. The stronger breeze has brought new challenges and opportunities, while the leading sailors are beginning to emerge across all four fleets.
More racing is scheduled for Thursday, with the battle for the European titles set to continue on the waters off Varkiza as the 2026 iQFOiL Youth & Junior European Championships move closer to their conclusion.
