The Double Mixed Offshore World Championship, organized by SSI with the support of Marina Militare and Difesa Servizi SPA, started this morning at 12.30 local time: leaving from the Slovenian city of Portoroz , the regatta will take the crews on a 252-mile offshore course across the middle and Northern Adriatic.
To push the ten Beneteau Figaro 3s supplied by the organization across the starting line, the first gusts of a Bora wind expected to increase significantly during the day: these conditions will challenge the competitors on their approach towards Ancona, a real mark rounding of the course, before returning towards Slovenia. The weather forecast for the next few hours announces intense and gusty breezes on the Eastern side of the Adriatic which, after sunset, can be replaced by lighter winds from the East, to then leave room for the typical Adriatic thermal breeze regimes.
In line with forecasts, about five hours after departure, the fleet remains close to the Croatian coast, near the city of Rovinj: the group is currently led by the French crew (Loison/Raguenau), but within less than a mile are also Team Italia (Zorzi/Di Monaco), Team Uruguay (Waksman/Fontanesi) and Team Belgium (Faguet/Gerckens), first on the starting line this morning.
