It was a long day on the water in Sanxenxo for the participating fleet in the Xacobeo 6mR Worlds. A very shifty wind, with hardly any intensity throughout the day meant a challenging second day for the Race Committee and prevented any new races from being held for the 40 boats disputing the world title. Bribon 500 in the Classics and Momo in the Open division; leading the competition after yesterday's races, continue to head the leaderboard, eagerly awaiting the restart of the competition on Thursday in the Ria de Pontevedra.
Shortly after 11:30h the Race Committee and the fleet headed out to the water to the racecourse at Ons, where there were initially better conditions. As the hours passed and having attempted unsuccessfully to start racing in front of Sanxenxo, the Committee made the call to finish the day.
On return to the docks, Jano Martín, the principal official of the Xacobeo 6mR Worlds, explained,
"In the morning we headed out to racecourse 1 at Ons, convinced that we would have a northwesterly wind for one or two hours from 13:00h onwards, and although it came in early and reached between twelve and fourteen knots, it didn't last even an hour. From then on, we were also covering the other racecourse and with every breeze that blew, we tried to set up a course, but the wind continued to die down again."
The Committee continued to attempt a race until at 17:30 the day was officially suspended.
"We were waiting until the very end to see if some wind would finally allow us at least one race, but we weren't in luck," concluded Martín.
"There were a couple of moments when we had wind of up to twelve knots," explained Pedro Campos, "but it didn't last more than twenty or twenty-five minutes, and we need between an hour and a half and two hours to complete a race in the World Championships."
With three days of Racing still to come, the president of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo and defender of the title with Bribon 500, made the most of the moment to sum up the event, and highlighted, "people are really happy; yesterday was a fabulous day of racing and the organization on the ground is also going really well. The village is completely full, and that is a clear sign that people love the event."
On Thursday, wind permitting, the fleet will be back competing at 13:00 h.
