The Rolex Middle Sea Race, a 606-nautical-mile challenge, is central to Malta's maritime heritage. Conceived in 1968, the race embodies Malta's relationship with the sea, combining adventure, endurance, and camaraderie. The 46th edition begins on 18 October 2025, with 118 crews, including 13 Maltese teams, starting from Grand Harbour, Valletta. The Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC), tracing its roots to the 1830s, has been pivotal in local sailing. Visionaries like Paul Ripard and John Ripard initiated the race around Sicily, now a renowned offshore event. Each October, the Saluting Battery signals the race's start, celebrating Malta's maritime spirit. Among Malta's top teams, Artie III, co-skippered by Lee Satariano and Christian Ripard, is highly decorated. The Podestà siblings' Elusive 2, winners in 2019 and 2020, continue their father's legacy. Calypso, co-owned by Dan Calascione and Seb Ripard, represents a family-centered campaign. Ton Ton Laferla Insurance, skippered by Jonathan Gambin, fields a loyal crew, including his son Gerald. The Jarhead Young Sailors Foundation nurtures future sailors with its J/109s, Jarhead and JYS Jan, offering a balanced learning environment. Otra Vez, owned by Aaron Gatt Floridia, returns with a partially new crew. Stefan Debattista's Geisha focuses on teamwork and minimal changes. Mistral Racing MT, a new entry, aims to rebuild a team bound by friendship. Lunz am Meer, skippered by Steve Carter, sails under the Maltese flag, showcasing global pedigree. Spirit of the Winds, a Dufour 40, returns after storm damage in 2024. Newer crews like Noah Dimm Racing Team and Vivace bring fresh enthusiasm and confidence. The Rolex Middle Sea Race 2025 sets sail from Malta's Grand Harbour on 18 October at 1100 CEST. Spectators can enjoy views from historic fortifications, while fans worldwide can watch the start live online.
