Azimut has presented the Magellano 27M, the third generation of the Magellano Series launched in the early 2000s on the initiative of Paolo and Giovanna Vitelli. Finnish designer Jarkko Jämsén is responsible for the exteriors; the interiors are by AMDL CIRCLE with Michele De Lucchi and Davide Angeli, in their first yacht design project.
The boat uses the Dual Mode hull, developed by the Azimut|Benetti Group R&D department with P.L. Ausonio Naval Architecture. It is a double-chine hull with a vertical bow, which extends the waterline length and eases wave entry, and a central skeg for course stability. The double chine spreads the frontal impact of the wave across two levels and lowers the loads involved. The hull shape is optimised for fuel consumption both at displacement speeds and at higher speeds. Behaviour in rough water was already a feature of the first Magellano, launched in 2009.
Two MAN V12 engines rated at 1,650 hp allow cruising between 16 and 18 knots, with the capacity to exceed 24 knots. Stated range is about 1,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. Roughly 30 per cent of the yacht's surfaces are in carbon fibre, cutting overall weight and affecting efficiency, consumption and dynamic performance.
The model introduces Azimut Silent Technology, a programme run by an in-house applied technology laboratory and aimed at noise, vibration and emissions. It covers flexible mounts for engines and generators, dedicated silencers and particulate filters. An optional Zero Emission Hotel Mode, powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries, allows guests to spend part of a day or a full night at anchor without running the generators.
Wood carries the interior scheme. In the main deck saloon and the owner's suite, light oak is combined with walnut details across ribbed, incised, flamed and carved surfaces. Side tables are hand-worked using the Japanese Naguri technique, and the wall above the bed head is covered in HOSOO fabric, handmade on Kyoto looms dating back 300 years, with a pattern reproducing a microscope enlargement of a tree trunk section. Lighting includes lamps by Produzione Privata, the studio De Lucchi founded in 1990, among them the Jona and Metafisica models.
The main deck is conceived as a loggia facing the sea, with large windows and wooden architectural elements referencing Mediterranean pergolas and patios, and echoing the wooden fans at the stern. A decade ago AMDL CIRCLE and De Lucchi designed Azimut's shore-based architectural identity concept, "A warm and natural seaside feeling", built around wooden brise-soleil and applied to the brand's offices and showrooms.
In 2009, during the Magellano Voyage, a winter crossing of more than 2,000 nautical miles in the Mediterranean, navigator and journalist Dag Pike observed that the yacht "sits solidly into the sea", referring to the sense of safety and control it kept under way.
