The Copa del Rey MAPFRE continues to strengthen as an event, with higher numbers of teams every year registering for the prime Mediterranean regatta. The organizing committee’s popular combination of participating classes: ORC in compensated time and one designs racing in real time such as the ClubSwan, J/70 and Blusail 24 for the Women´s Cup, continues to prove successful and is a referential event for boat owners and sailors around the world. For teams, the honour of adding their name to the list of winners of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE, located under the bust of King Felipe VI in the entrance of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, along with the possibility of winning one of the most prized trophies in international sailing, is a guarantee of popularity reflected by the yearly registration numbers.
On Saturday 15th June, registration for the 42nd edition of the event closed with 122 boats signed up to date. Teams will have until Sunday 28th July to complete the registration of their teams, a date which the regatta’s organization dedicates both to the final registration and the measurement of sails and ratings, along with the training sessions which are forecast up until Monday 29th July on the racecourse in the Bay of Palma.
Cutting the tape
On Saturday 27th July, the Copa del Rey MAPFRE celebrates its official opening act and the traditional cutting of the tape by local authorities and sponsors, marking the kick-off of the 42nd edition. Other noteworthy social events include the owner’s dinner at the Castillo Hotel Son Vida on Tuesday 30th July, the cocktail event ‘blanco by MAPFRE’ held on the terrace of the club on Thursday 1st August, and the final prizegiving ceremony on Saturday 3rd August, which will be presided by King Felipe at Ses Voltes, located at the foot of Palma Cathedral.
