The wait is over, and the first warning signal of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2024 will be given in Trieste, Italy, at noon on Friday, April 19.
Trieste, a city with a rich sailing heritage and home to Italy's largest Melges 24 fleet, is proud to host the Melges 24 European Sailing Series event for the third consecutive year. This is not just a coincidence but a testament to Trieste's status as a sailing hub.
Mauro Bailo, Sports Director of the Yacht Club Adriaco, expressed his pride in welcoming the Melges 24 fleet to Trieste, emphasizing its longstanding presence and excellence in one-design sailing. "We are proud to warmly welcome the Melges 24 fleet in Trieste, which has been one of the best expressions of one-design sailing globally for decades."
The Melges 24 European Sailing Series' season opener and subsequent events will run from April to October, covering Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Norway, Denmark, and Italy.
26 teams eagerly registered for this event, representing a diverse array of nations and showcasing the global appeal of the Melges 24 class. Participating countries include Germany, Great Britain, Slovenia, Croatia, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, and Italy.
Among the entries are top European teams and long-time class loyalists. Akos Csolto's Chinook (HUN), the 2023 overall and Corinthian series winner, regards Trieste as a favorite race. “Trieste holds a special place in our hearts, blending racing excitement with its vibrant Italian charm. Our team's third consecutive visit to Trieste is imbued with nostalgia, having secured our maiden ESS victory here two years ago. With the racing season launching for many, we're eager for the spirited competition and camaraderie on the water, fueled by the hope of favorable conditions.
We are looking forward to the event in Trieste, where we'll savor the thrill of racing and the company of fellow Melges 24 enthusiasts - all while enjoying the renowned Illy coffee.”
Reigning European Champion Michele Paoletti will sail his Strambapapà (ITA) with a unique crew, as his wife Giovanna Micol joined the Italian women's team of the 37th America's Cup.
The top representative of the Croatian fleet, Razjaren of Ante Cesic, ranked 5th in the 2023 ESS ranking, is eager for more success, welcoming all Melges 24 teams to his home club in Split for the Melges 24 European Championship in late September.
From the 2023 season Top 5, Miles Quinton's Zhik Race Team from Great Britain is on the entry list. After past victories, they aim high.
The winners of the Trieste event will be determined by Sunday afternoon, after nine scheduled races over three days starting Friday at noon.
