SailGP, the new, global sports league, today announced a local partnership with California-based technology company Copia, on a program designed to reduce and redistribute any excess edible food during the league’s inaugural U.S. event in the Bay Area in early May. Copia’s motto is “Waste Less, Feed More.”

In collaboration with Copia, SailGP is aiming to have zero event-related food waste. Excess food will be collected at the end of each day of operation at two key event sites – the SailGP Technical Base in Alameda and the public SailGP Race Village at the Marina Yacht Club Peninsula. All food deemed consumable will be donated to local organizations in need through Copia’s technology platform that connects excess food with non-profits in need.

“By its very nature, sailing is a sport with a deep connection to the environment, and as an organization, SailGP is committed to investing in a number of environmentally sustainable initiatives,” said SailGP Co-Founder and CEO Russell Coutts. “Copia has developed a strong reputation in the food waste reduction space, and we are pleased to partner with the organization to reduce wastage and in doing so, provide food donations to local areas in need.”

The food collection officially began on Sunday, April 14, at the Alameda site, where all six competing national teams are based now through the races on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. Food will also be collected from the Race Village on both event dates. To date, SailGP’s donations to Copia have saved 2,606 pounds in CO2 emissions and 217,000 gallons of water, while providing nearly 500 meals to those in need.

SailGP will be making its U.S. debut on the waters of San Francisco Bay, showcasing the next generation of high-adrenaline, ultra-athletic sailing. Teams representing the United States, Australia, China, France, Great Britain, and Japan will compete in a total of five short-format fleet races over the two-day period. The top two teams will face off in a match race finale on Sunday, May 5 to determine the San Francisco SailGP champion.

Considered a leading resource for food recovery and donation, Copia has partnered with a number of high-profile events. In 2016, in support of Super Bowl 50, Copia worked with the NFL and multiple brands and venues to repurpose 14+ tons of food and feed 23,000 people in one weekend. In 2017, Copia went to Hollywood where for the first time ever no food was wasted during Oscars Weekend. Copia successfully recovered 1,300+ pounds of gourmet food from the Vanity Fair After Party, Independent Spirit Awards and the Women in Film Pre-Oscar Party to feed over 1,000 people in need.
