Sealence Power Tech, the "Energy" division of Sealence, presented at the Electric and Hybrid Marine Expo 2024 in Amsterdam its innovative solid-state battery designed specifically for the marine industry. This new product represents a significant step forward in the field of batteries for marine use, positioning Sealence Power Tech among the pioneers in Europe in offering battery packs based on this revolutionary technology on the market.
Solid-state batteries combine safety, efficiency and high energy density, solving many issues present in other technologies already on the market. Safety - in fact - is one of the inherent strengths of Solid State technology, thanks to their stability and the reduction of risks associated with the essence of liquid electrolytes, making Sealence's new battery packs among the safest. In addition, thanks to Sealence Power Tech's proprietary Termal Battery Management System technology, an additional layer of safety is added through continuous monitoring of battery health, individual temperatures, and sophisticated preventive fault diagnosis algorithms that give advance warning of the onset of any issues by directly sending warnings both locally and to the "Operational Control Center" set up at Sealence headquarters.
With Sealence Power Tech's ongoing commitment to innovation, these new batteries offer greater thermal and chemical stability, drastically reducing the risk of accidents compared to traditional solutions and allowing you to sail with the confidence of having a reliable and safe power source on board. Sealence Power Tech presented two versions its Solid State Battery, designed to meet different energy needs.
The 400V version with an energy capacity of 75 kWh and 312 kg in weight and the 800V version with an energy capacity of 150 kWh and 625 kg in weight. Both versions boast an energy density of 240 Wh/kg and a discharge capacity of up to 2C, or twice their energy capacity. This feature enables high energy delivery, which is essential for marine applications that require high performance in terms of power and reliability, allowing them to operate with greater efficiency and less charging downtime.
Another distinguishing feature concerns the modularity of the system, which allows multiple batteries to be connected in a single system (about 5 MWh). This scalability allows power solutions to be tailored to specific power and range requirements, making our batteries ideal for a wide range of marine applications, from small boats to large yachts.
Safety is one of the strengths of the cells used in these batteries, as they are among the safest in the industry due to their stability and reduced risks associated with the use of liquid electrolytes. In addition, thanks to the proprietary BMS technology developed by Sealence Power Tech, an additional level of safety can be achieved, making it possible to accurately monitor battery health, operating conditions and perform diagnostics even remotely, directly from the operations control center at the company's headquarters. This advanced monitoring system makes it possible to intervene promptly in case of anomalies (predictive diagnostics), thus providing greater peace of mind for end users.
Sealence Power Tech is already taking orders for these innovative batteries, with first deliveries scheduled for the second quarter of 2025. The launch price is set at €500/kWh for volume orders, making this technology economically competitive as well.
"We are excited to be able to offer such an advanced and safe solution in the marine industry, which has increasingly turned its gaze toward electrification in recent years," said William Gobbo, CEO of Sealence Power Tech. "We are confident that our Solid State Battery will revolutionize the way energy is used in marine applications. With our commitment to innovation and safety, we are paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future for boating.
