Suzuki prepares to launch its new flagship outboard motor

That Suzuki has been working for some time on a model set to become the new top-of-the-range outboard motor is a well-known rumor in the industry. Similarly, speculation has long suggested that the Japanese manufacturer is preparing to introduce a new line of electric marine engines. These were initially expected by 2024 but have yet to make an appearance. However, regarding the high-performance outboard motor, first discussed in 2022, it now seems the time is ripe for its debut.

The 4.4L V6 engine, available in 300 and 350 HP configurations, currently represents Suzuki Marine’s flagship thermal unit. With a 12.0:1 compression ratio—typically reserved for competition-grade engines—it has likely reached the peak of its development. Given the recent industry trends set by Yamaha and Mercury, which have paved the way for increasingly powerful outboards to accommodate larger boats, Suzuki’s response was inevitable.

During the Miami International Boat Show last February, Suzuki officially confirmed that it is close to unveiling a new outboard model. However, no specific details about its specifications were disclosed.

A New V8 on the Horizon?

It is unlikely that this new model will still be a V6; rather, industry insiders speculate that it could be Suzuki’s first-ever V8 engine, featuring a four-valve-per-cylinder configuration and a displacement greater than 4.4 liters. Some sources suggest that it may exceed 5,000 cm³, allowing for the development of multiple variants with different power levels. This approach would position Suzuki to compete in the high-horsepower segment, potentially exceeding 500 HP.

While these details remain unconfirmed, many expect Suzuki to incorporate its Dual Prop System, a contra-rotating propeller system already present on the DF300 and DF350 models, which has been a key factor in their success. Notably, Suzuki was the first outboard manufacturer to commercialize this technology in the industry.

Another near certainty is that the new model will be entirely “by-wire”, featuring full electronic control for power management and steering.

PressMare will continue to monitor Suzuki’s developments and provide updates on this exciting new launch.
