Scarlino, Tuscany beckons for red hot 52 Super Series fleet

For the second event of the five regatta season the 2023 52 Super Series resumes competition this week in Tuscany as the beautiful, modern, purpose-built Marina di Scarlino, hosts the 52 Super Series Scarlino Sailing Week. 

Turkish-flagged Provezza comes to Tuscany with a six points lead on the overall standings, but after eight races so far only 11 points separate the top seven boats. Tony Langley’s Gladiator (GBR), now with Guillermo Parada steering, is tied on points with second-placed Quantum Racing powered by American Magic. And while there is every chance that any one of these three teams could win in Scarlino, equally there are probably four or five more teams who might strike gold.

Among them is Andy Soriano’s Alegre (GBR) team. They brought in Aussie Olympic gold medallist Will Ryan in Scarlino last year and have Italian navigator Francesco Mongelli enhancing the mood on board as well as bringing huge experience of the class and the different venues. After keel modifications last year they are widely recognised as a fast boat with all the components in place to win a regatta. A poor final day cost them in Saint Tropez but Mongelli believes in the team and that the regatta win will come in time. Yesterday's practice race throws yet more fire into the ring as Jean Luc Petithuguenin’s French team on Paprec won one race, with the other victory going to the Thai team on Vayu.

Sailing Legends

In the world of sailing champions, eyes will be on the legendary tacticians of Phoenix (RSA) and Platoon (GER). Phoenix’s (RSA) tactician is none other than Red Bull sponsored Santiago Lange (ARG), one of the world's most distinguished sailors, and a legend on the open seas. At the age of 62, having beat cancer and part of his lung removed, the Argentinian sailor will seek his fourth Olympic medal in what will be his eighth games at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.  

On the other side there is Platoon's (GER) tactician Vasco Vascotto. The Italian sailor has under his belt 25 World Championships, 25 Italian Championships and 15 European titles in different offshore monotype classes, from J/24 to TP52, from Farr 40 to ORC 670.

Harry Melges IV, (Lake Geneva, WI), sailing at the helm of Quantum Racing, speaks about the impact of the loss of his grandfather just last week, Buddy Melges. Also known as the 'Grand Master' of competitive yachting, Buddy was an internationally known and very well-respected yachtsman, most recognised for his America’s Cup accomplishments.

"Growing up with my grandfather Buddy, he was my hero, still is my hero. It's pretty tough with him passing this last week. But he is defintiely very inspiring for me, and I will continue to carry on his legacy and his name," Harry said.
