Marina di Scarlino, Italy (May 27, 2018) - Congratulations are in full order for American Drew Freides at the helm of PACIFIC YANKEE, with tactician Paul Goodison and crew member Charlie Smythe - they are 2018 Melges 20 World League, Scarlino Champions. They completed their mission to win Scarlino, the second round of competition on the European circuit.

"We have officially gotten off on the right foot here in Europe," said winner Drew Freides. "But, we have a lot of opponents that are very well prepared which is going to make the rest of the season very, very interesting. We still have some things that we want to work on, in particular our sails. Otherwise, we are quite centered and being able to work on things with our success in Scarlino makes for a great way to face future Melges 20 World League events."

With this win, Freides' first seasonal success in Europe is noted and has immediately made it very clear to the competition - that on the road leading to the World Championship scheduled for Cagliari in October, he is THE team to beat.

Three additional races were completed on the final day of racing, and apart from Freides confirming and securing the top spot on the podium, the fight for the remaining places ignited. Second runner-up Kryzysztof Krempec on MAG TINY (Tomislav Basic, tactician), and current World League Ranking Leader Vladimir Prosikhin aboard NIKA (Michele Ivaldi, tactician) in third, both had a successful day with one race win each, as did Filippo Pacinotti's BRONTOLO (Manu Weiller, tactician).

A spectacular performance by Italy's Marco Giannini racing SIDERVAL has awarded him the Corinthian first place position, finishing up an impressive sixth in the open division.

Next weekend, June 1-3, the Melges 32 World League cranks up on the same Marina di Scarlino race course.

The Melges World League is supported by Helly Hansen, Garmin Marine, North Sails, Toremar, Lavazza, and Melges Europe in collaboration with Club Nautico Scarlino, Rigoni di Asiago, Resort Baia Scarlino and Scarlino Yacht Service.

Melges World League has signed and adopts the code of ethics of the Charta Smerarlda strongly promoting the values of One Ocean Foundation.
