Artemis Technologies has been researching and developing new green technologies throughout 2018 and is now using those technologies to manufacture a 45-metre autonomous sailing vessel that will change the face of the maritime industry and result in a zero-emissions shipbuilding facility in Belfast.
An autonomous sailing vessel (ASV) is an unmanned sailboat, capable of sailing through water using advanced computerised control systems and sustainable energy sources such as wind.
Artemis Technologies’ autonomous sailing vessel will be the world’s first hydro-foiling and self-regenerating commercial vessel, capable of operating without the consumption of any fossil fuels, which will contribute significantly to the decarbonisation of maritime.
The 45-metre catamaran, based on the Artemis Racing America’s Cup boat design, will travel at a top speed of 50 knots and can enjoy speeds of up to 30 knots even when there is zero wind due to innovative energy recovery systems developed in Formula 1.
Autonomous sailing vessels can be used for environmental monitoring, maritime search and rescue, humanitarian relief, security and surveillance, seabed mapping, fast ferry or high value cargo transportation. However,Artemis Technologies’ first autonomous sailing vessel will be designed and developed as a city to city passenger vessel, with a payload of 7,500kg.
The successful electrification of a foiling vessel will create endless possibilities for the maritime industry and generate opportunities to secure a sustainable shipping future.
