Vamos Mi Amor wins 19th edition of Coppa Europa Smeralda 888
The 19th edition of the Coppa Europa Smeralda 888, an event organised by the YCCS and part of the annual circuit for the class, concluded today in Porto Cervo. Victory went to Vamos Mi Amor, owned by Charles de Bourbon, just one point ahead of the runner-up Beda, owned by Timifey Sukhotin and Marc Stevenazzi. Third place went to Black Star, owned by Paolo Rotelli and Max Stimamiglio.
The three days of racing were characterised by the usual friendly and convivial spirit, and the full schedule of competitions was completed, with eight windward-leewards held in light wind conditions. Racing took place on board Smeralda 888 boats, a one-design vessel commissioned in 1991 from designer German Frers by the YCCS.
This morning at 11 a.m. the seven teams participating in the event met on the regatta course off Porto Cervo for the final races. The crew of Black Star had looked to be the favourite, leading the provisional general classification with a delta of 7 points ahead of Vamos Mi Amor as they headed into the final day. However today's three races saw Vamos Mi Amor take two second places and a third to claim the top step of the podium ahead of Beda, who also racked up excellent results today, with two wins and a second place. A difficult day for Black Star (4-6-7 scoreline) saw the team drop to third place in the overall classification.
The final prize giving ceremony took place in the early afternoon at the YCCS, where the winner was also awarded a prize presented by Garmin Marine, an inReach Mini 2 pocket device.
Before the traditional September regattas begin, the next sporting event on the YCCS calendar will be the Members' Championship on 7 August.
