Spinlock used the platform of the recent METSTRADE show in Amsterdam to launch a host of new products, whilst at the same time scooping a DAME Award for its new app-driven sail monitoring and management tool ‘Sail-Sense’.

Sail-Sense is a multifunctional lightweight sensor that attaches to a sail, measuring UV exposure, hours of use, G-Force and flogging. It links with an app to deliver analytical and performance data. The Jury recognised this as a significant, well-designed development that will assist owners and captains on yachts of all sizes in the future. It was considered to be a very strong category winner among all DAME entries this year.

Until now, evaluating the condition of sails could only be made visually, without a comprehensive system to log their use, history and degradation. Sail Sense completely changes how wardrobes of sails are managed, allowing them to be tracked, traced and located, with their full history, all viewable with a few taps. The make, model, construction date, dimensions and materials are stored alongside its usage history, providing a comprehensive view of each sail in a fleet, managed by either a single user or a wider team.
On the water, Sail Sense automatically wakes upon movement, immediately logging UV exposure, G-Force and flogging. Research by Southampton University that looked closely at sail materials, fibres, construction and the effects of UV and motion on sails is built into the app to help create a health score for each sail.

Sail Sense can be sewn to a sail during construction or as an aftermarket purchase. The battery lasts up to five years, ensuring users can accurately record a sail’s condition and monitor degradation.

For teams and businesses with large sail wardrobes such as super yachts, race teams and charter operators, Sail Sense provides additional asset tracking and inventory management, with data providing sailmakers, fabric manufacturers and groups such as insurance companies a whole suite of previously unknown data.

The other innovative products that Spinlock launched at the show were also all shortlisted for DAME Awards and included the best-in-class carbon tiller extension, the unique ALTO personal floatation aid and the new VITO lifejacket, which is derived from the tried and tested Custom VOR 170N lifejacket worn by Volvo Ocean Race teams.

Each of these new products have been well received by media and customers alike and complement Spinlock’s existing market-leading marine products within three distinct sectors: control– world-renowned rope holding and deck hardware products; protect– an award-winning range of personal protective equipment including lifejackets, harnesses and flotation devices; and, sense– innovative data management tools for enhancing performance.

James Hall from Spinlock said, “We are extremely proud of these industry-leading new products and excited to be bringing them to market. Obviously we are absolutely thrilled to have won the DAME Award for Sail-Sense. The new multifunctional sail sensor will provide sailors with crucial information regarding a sails life and handling which will give them a great insight into their sailing execution and provide valuable guidance to streamline their performance. We are also delighted to have created new sectors with our products such as the ALTO flotation aid.”
