On June 8th One Ocean Foundation will be participating to the United Nations’ annual conference for World Oceans Day as Supporting Partner of the event.

The conference, which this year will take place in virtual mode, will be dedicated to the theme “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean” and will be characterized by a series of speeches and presentations by important representatives of key institutions,  of the entertainment industry and of the business world.

The entire day will see alternating round tables, presentations and talks from speakers such as actress and supermodel Cara Delevingne, marine explorer and film producer Jean-Michel Cousteau, oceanographer Sylvia Earle, singer Ellie Goulding, young activist Lilly Platte.

At 7 p.m. CEST on Monday, June 8, Secretary General Jan Pachner and the head of the Scientific Committee, Stefano Pogutz, will speak on behalf of the One Ocean Foundation to present the second report of our multi-year research project dedicated to investigating the relationship between companies and ocean sustainability: “Business for Ocean Sustainability – a global perspective”.

We believe in the fundamental role of companies in accelerating sustainable change and, through this project, we aim to inspire and involve the business world. Our research adopts a new point of view, focusing on measuring companies’ awareness, strategies, and innovative practices. The analysis is not limited to identifying direct pressures generated by production and consumption activities, but also includes indirect pressures on marine and coastal ecosystem.

The first report, presented in November 2019, focused on the Mediterranean Sea and studied the relationship between the economy and the sustainability of the oceans from an new perspective. The study involved more than 220 national and international companies, start-ups, associations and NGOs from 13 industrial sectors.

Differently from last year’s edition, focused on the Mediterranean, the 2020 edition adopts a global perspective, analyzing a sample of 1664 companies across 16 sectors and 6 continents.

The new edition, which will be presented in the panel discussion “The blue economy and the private sector”, was also carried out with the support of SDA Bocconi, McKinsey & Company and the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council).

We are particularly proud of this research, the only one of its kind at international level, which has been realized thanks to the support of our numerous partners and which will continue in the years to come.

Please follow us, support us, and help us raise awareness around our research.
