New Swan 73: sailing performance and onboard living quality
Nautor Swan has unveiled the Swan 73, a model that brings the shipyard back into the 22-metre segment after around two decades. Announced in the year of the brand’s 60th anniversary, the yacht is currently under construction at the Boatbuilding Technology Centre in Pietarsaari, Finland, with launch scheduled for 2027.
With an overall length of 23.67 metres and a hull length of 22.47 metres, the Swan 73 positions itself just below the maxi yacht segment, offering comparable levels of comfort while ensuring easier handling and greater operational versatility. Maximum beam reaches 6.12 metres, while light displacement is approximately 38.8 tonnes, with a ballast of about 8,500 kg.
Naval architecture is by Germán Frers, continuing a collaboration with the yard spanning more than four decades. The project follows a design philosophy combining efficient hull lines with high performance, featuring a vinylester-infused fiberglass laminate hull with sandwich construction and local carbon reinforcements in both hull and deck. The lines are slim and well balanced, with a sail plan designed to ensure responsiveness, control and stability across a range of sailing conditions.
From an appendage standpoint, two configurations are available: a standard keel with a draft of 3.20 metres and a telescopic keel ranging from 2.80 to 4.25 metres, combining improved upwind performance with access to shallower waters when at anchor or in certain harbours. Auxiliary propulsion is provided by a Yanmar engine rated at 143 kW (195 hp).
Exterior design, developed by Luca Ardizio Design, follows an evolutionary approach consistent with Swan’s identity, focusing on proportions, fluidity and integration of surfaces rather than stylistic disruption. The deck layout introduces an asymmetrical configuration, with an offset companionway, differentiated cockpits and integrated running rigging to ensure order and functionality. Twin helm stations provide full visibility and control in all conditions, while the arrangement allows efficient handling even with a reduced crew.
The deck is organised into four main areas. Forward, a relaxation zone dedicated to sunbathing can be optionally equipped with a lightweight “Arabian-style” shade. At the centre, the guest cockpit acts as the core of onboard living, conceived as a protected space in continuity with the interior and optionally fitted with a rigid roof, transforming it into a fully enclosed and climate-controlled environment. Aft, the sailing cockpit is dedicated to manoeuvring, with winches and control systems arranged for performance sailing. At the stern, the beach club area features a swimming platform and a large lazarette capable of accommodating a 2.80-metre rigid tender along with additional equipment.
Interiors, designed by Blend Studio, reinterpret Swan’s design language in a contemporary way, with spaces defined by smooth transitions and soft geometries. Layout options include three or four guest cabins, with the galley and crew area positioned aft to port. Forward, the owner’s area can be configured either with an enlarged bathroom or a walk-in wardrobe, ensuring privacy and separation from technical spaces.
Selected materials include Canaletto walnut, used to add depth and character, combined with light-toned fabrics and surfaces that enhance brightness and perceived comfort. Interior finishes align with the brand’s established décor themes—Spirit of Finland, Timeless Classic, Traditional Navy and Wine Cowes—alongside a bespoke configuration introduced for this model.
Overall, the Swan 73 is conceived for versatile use, capable of alternating between cruising and performance sailing. The project integrates elements typical of racing yachts, such as helm sensitivity and precise sail handling, with solutions dedicated to onboard living, including articulated outdoor spaces, flexible interior layouts and a design approach that emphasises continuity between interior and exterior environments.
