The XIV Southern Wind Rendezvous and Trophy was especially thrilling today with yachts in the Performance Class getting a fleet start, a real rarity in a superyacht regatta. Kiboko Tres was the star of this breezy day in the SWS Trophy, an event that is raced within the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

Principal Race Officer Peter Craig took advantage of the day’s fresh breeze with gusts at up to 29 knots to send the yachts flying along a 30.6nm course that started and finished off Porto Cervo following a northerly route past Caprera before doubling back between Spargi and La Maddalena passing Isola delle Bisce to the finish. Kiboko Tres placed first in the SWS Trophy fleet, followed by Grande Orazio and All Smoke.

Juan Ignacio Entrecanales, Kiboko’s owner, said: “Today was fantastic. We sailed well, at the same speed as some of the larger boats, but made a couple of small mistakes that cost us some time. We had Jim Schmicker aboard and he knows this hull design like nobody else, so when he said we could heel a bit more on the downwind leg we did and we caught up. I love the way the SW105’s twin rudders feel, you can be heeled and still feel the control of the boat that stays light at the helm. Today was good fun in winds that touched 28 knots at some points.”

As can be expected, the SWS Trophy attracts the most beautiful yachts and best talent from sailors to designers. Jim Schmicker, vice president and a senior naval architect at Farr Yacht Design, was here racing aboard Kiboko Tres, whose hull is a Farr design. He reported that: “The boat is feeling amazing, very fast, actually always fast. I loved the fleet start, it was great to mix it up and here we’re all pros. These sailors know how to line up and keep it moving along. There were no dangerous situations and it was all really fun.”

Ammonite’s Owner Marcus Blackmore also enjoyed the start and said so in plain and simple words: “I say that staggered starts are boring as heck so here’s to the new format.”

The breeze is predicted to be even stronger tomorrow, when just the Southern Wind Trophy fleet is scheduled to race. Our congratulations go to Kiboko Tres and her crew.
