Southern Wind is proud to be among the first shipyards to commit to a gross-tonnage-based reinvestment program which will fund a highly-important marine conservation project. Ocean health is key to building a viable future for sustainable yachting, and we are delighted to contribute to the conservation of the world’s oceans.

Marine Conservation & Yachting:

Ocean health is essential to the future of our planet. In terms of the yachting industry, there is no possibility of a sustainable future for the yachting industry without healthy oceans. For this reason, reinvesting in initiatives which facilitate marine conservation is not only the right thing to do, it is imperative as an investment in our common future. Together, as an industry, we can meaningfully contribute to the conservation and rejuvenation of our planet’s oceans.

The IMMAs Program:
The entirety of the amount reinvested will go to the highly-effective Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) program, which has been endorsed by the Water Revolution Foundation. The goal of this program, which exists under the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Task Force on Marine Mammal Protected Areas, is to identify key areas that are highly-important for marine life, which can then be prioritized for protection and conservation. Marine ecosystems are vital to the health of our oceans, making the identification and protection of marine mammal areas essential to ocean conservation. There are already 159 IMMAs which have been identified in the Southern Hemisphere; the next region to be mapped is the North Atlantic.

Our Commitment:
Along with our fellow participating shipyards, we will be contributing €1 per gross ton delivered in 2021. Together, our goal is to reach the €555,000 needed to fund the two-year North Atlantic IMMA project. The amount of €1 per gross ton was calculated by dividing the target funding needed by the amount of gross tonnage expected to be delivered in 2021.  For each yacht we deliver, we will reinvest the amount per gross ton into the IMMA North Atlantic project via the Water Revolution Foundation.

We are excited to commit to this project, and truly believe in its potential to contribute to marine conservation and regeneration. We urge our fellow shipyards to join us in contributing to both the health of our planet’s oceans and to building a long-term future for sustainable yachting and the yachting industry.
