SEA.AI has been developing since 2018 a range of collision avoidance products combining the latest in machine vision and artificial intelligence technologies. The company manufactures market-specific products: from commercial to search and rescue vessels to pleasure craft and racing yachts – with more than half of the Vendée Globe fleet soon to set off singlehanded non-stop around the world with SEA.AI equipment on board.

The latest addition to the SEA.AI range is the ‘Brain’. This new product will be on display at METSTRADE taking place in Amsterdam's RAI centre over 19-21 November, where SEA.AI will be exhibiting on stand 01.513. In the run up to the show the SEA.AI Brain has been nominated for the prestigious DAME awards in the ‘Navigation and Communication’ category. The winner of this will be announced on the first day of the trade show on 19 November.

Pioneering Maritime Machine Vision Since 2018  

SEA.AI fills a critical gap in a vessel’s collision avoidance equipment between AIS and radar.

At present AIS can track and identify vessels, and superimpose their position and ID over an electronic chart which in turn shows land, depth contours, fixed navigation marks, obstructions, etc. Meanwhile radar can display unidentified targets strongly, weakly or not at all depending upon their range and radar signature as well as the quality of the receiving radar equipment and how well it is set up. But there remain many other items on the high seas that neither AIS nor radar will identify. These include vessels not fitted with AIS or with a poor radar signature, larger flotsam, large sealife basking on the surface, as well as tracking those involved in man overboard incidents.

SEA.AI is able to spot these objects via its daylight and infrared night time cameras mounted on the highest position of a vessel. Live video from these cameras is then compared, using AI and machine vision, with SEA.AI’s giant and ever-expanding database of objects to determine whether or not an object in view represents a collision threat. Thanks to its cameras and its tech, SEA.AI is able to maintain a watch around the clock, in daylight, twilight and at night time. It has learned, with ever improving skill, to recognise potential collision threats regardless of visibility and sea-state. 

The SEA.AI product range now comprises models designed for specific markets: The Sentry is mainly for motoryachts and Search and Rescue vessels. The Offshore is tailored to blue water cruising yachts while the Competition model is ‘must-fit’ technology for the IMOCA race boats competing in the Vendée Globe and the 100ft Ultime trimarans making attempts this winter on the Jules Verne Trophy - the record for sailing non-stop around the world.

Brain, the latest addition to SEA.AI’s portfolio, is designed to integrate directly into a vessel’s existing thermal camera set-up, transforming them into intelligent, automated collision detection tools.
