SW105 Taniwha winner of the Boat International Design and Innovation Award
SW105 Taniwha brought home the Outstanding Exterior Design award
Last night (June 22), SW105 Taniwha brought home the "Outstanding Exterior Design" award in occasion of the Boat International Design and Innovation Awards prizegiving ceremony, held in Milan.
With the exterior masterfully designed by Nauta Design and hull lines penned by Farr Yacht Design, Taniwha's unprecedented exterior was so highly customized that that the shipyard developed an entirely new build configuration, dubbed SW105GT (GranTurismo).
Such development was so appreciated by Boat International's esteemed judging panel that the motivation behind the appointment reads: "Built for a customer who wanted to push the performance quotient to the limit, the builder and designers rethought design, layout and construction, shaving 5,7 tonnes from weight of her sisterships. The deckhouse has been retooled with sports car styling and a glass coach roof and matching crew hatch. The cockpit is wider and shallower, and its seating areas appear to float above the deck, providing ample opportunity for athmospheric nigh-time LED lighting. The rolled teak caprail on the coaming is a noteworthy feature made with veneer over a cored composite, which is perfectly executed to look like the adjoining deck's thick hardwood planking"
Southern Wind Commercial Director, Andrea Micheli, proudly welcomes this important award for the Company, commenting: "This Design Award, also represents a celebration of the design process which led to the development of Taniwha. Optimized to offer maximum flexibility and customization, it demonstrates how our Smart Custom philosophy is able to meet the expectations of even the most demanding owner, thanks to the excellent team work between the shipyard and the designers".
Nauta Design's Massimo Gino couldn't hide his satisfaction while proudly explaining: "This new deck design has an innovative and clean look that is driven by the methods of composite construction and by racing yacht styling. We think that our GT design will be a successful new style because it rests on a solid base of concepts, which are the expression of its pure design".
The yacht's hull lines, appendages and sail plan are the result of multiple performance studies conducted by Farr Yacht Design in this size range, as Farr Vice President Jim Schmicker explains: "The hull shape of the SW105 Taniwha exhibits the classic Farr performance DNA with a fine narrow bow, end waterline entry and optimized transom shape. The deep forefoot and short forward overhang combined with narrow bow sections reduce the tendency to slam".
