In the Eastern Mediterranean, competition among marinas is increasingly driven not only by berth capacity but also by the quality of the experience offered to owners, crews and local communities. It is within this context that D-Marin has completed the redevelopment of Gouvia Marina in Corfu, following an €8.5 million investment covering infrastructure, services, digitalization and sustainability.

Strategically located between the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, Gouvia Marina is the largest marina on the island and one of the region’s key economic drivers. The project aims to strengthen its role as a major gateway for yachting in the Ionian area while expanding its function beyond traditional marina activities.

One of the most significant aspects of the redevelopment is the increase in berthing capacity. A total of 104 new berths have been added for yachts up to 50 metres in length, alongside new parking areas and an additional 6,000 square metres of dry storage facilities. At the same time, the entire waterfront area has been pedestrianized, while the internal road network has undergone extensive renovation. Sanitary facilities and shower areas have also been upgraded to improve accessibility, comfort and the overall experience for owners and crews.

The project extends beyond operational improvements. Particular attention has been paid to landscaping and public spaces, with the planting of more than 2,000 trees and plants. A new playground and an amphitheatre have also been created to host concerts, cultural events and open-air cinema screenings, reinforcing the marina’s role as a social and community hub. According to Ioannis Koutsodontis, Regional Director of D-Marin Greece, the project represents more than a simple infrastructure upgrade, combining construction quality, technological innovation and sustainability to create a destination closely connected with the local community of Corfu.

Digitalization has been another key component of the redevelopment. All berths are now equipped with smart utility pedestals, enabling remote monitoring and management of electricity and water consumption through the D-Marin mobile app. The marina’s digital infrastructure has also been upgraded, including enhanced Wi-Fi coverage across the entire facility. According to D-Marin, these improvements have already translated into higher customer satisfaction, reflected in an 11-point increase in the marina’s Net Promoter Score (NPS).

Sustainability and ESG principles have been integrated throughout the project. Gouvia Marina now features high-pressure water filtration systems, advanced fire detection and emergency alarm systems, energy-efficient LED lighting and electric vehicle charging stations. Landscaping improvements and enhanced accessibility measures further contribute to reducing the marina’s environmental footprint.

Among the most significant developments is the completion of D-Marin’s first on-site solar installation in Greece. The 100 kWp photovoltaic system is expected to generate approximately 167 MWh of clean energy annually, covering around 20% of the marina’s operational energy requirements.

As highlighted by Korina Kostakaki, Head of Sustainability and Health & Safety at D-Marin Greece, the project forms part of the group’s broader decarbonization strategy and complements the 5 MW of photovoltaic capacity already installed across D-Marin marinas in Turkey, Croatia and Italy. The initiative supports the company’s target of reducing emissions by 42% by 2030.

The redevelopment of Gouvia Marina was supported through the “Greece 2.0” National Recovery and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union through NextGenerationEU. According to D-Marin, the project represents a further step in the modernization of Greece’s marina infrastructure and in the development of facilities capable of combining yachting services, sustainability and integration with the local territory.
